A Survey to Determine the Zone of Equipoise for the Proximal FEmur Resection or Internal Fixation fOR Metastases (PERFORM) Randomized Controlled Trial.
This study aimed to establish a clinical equipoise zone for the PERFORM trial, which compares resection and endoprosthetic reconstruction to internal fixation for proximal femur skeletal metastases. A survey was conducted with 76 orthopedic oncologists worldwide to determine key factors influencing surgical decisions, including life expectancy, bone loss, and perioperative risks. The results suggest a study population with 25-75% bone loss, life expectancy of at least 6 months, and minimal to moderate complication risks, with 93% of respondents expressing interest in participating in the trial.
